Planning stages and setting SMARTER targets
The planning stage of the task is the most important. Anything you do, if you properly plan for it, will turn out to be successful. You can identify barriers to your success and problem solve along the way. Tasks can sometimes seem unmanageable until you start to break them into small steps.
Including a timeframe helps improve your self management and, by being able to tick off small steps, helps your self motivation and sense of achievement.
Questions to ask yourself as you start to think about the tasks you will complete
for this Award are:
- Why have I chosen this particular task?
- What do I want to learn from this experience?
- What do I already know and what else do I want to find out about?
- What strengths have I got that will help me to complete this task?
- What are my areas of weakness and can I include this as a SMARTER target
as something I want to improve on?
- Is the task outside of my comfort zone? What is challenging for me?
- Is the situation something new to me, or am I planning to work with unfamiliar people?
- Have I set myself a task that will provide me with enough opportunity to extend my study or practical application over a period of three months or equivalent hours?
- Am I excited by what I have chosen to do? If not why not? Can I go back and make my task exciting? You will need to learn to think outside the square.
- Have I identified the ‘best’ possible SMARTER targets? Are the targets something I can prove by generating evidence to show they have been met or improved?
At Level 3 the student is expected to be able to work independently, engineer their own tasks which have flexible titles to allow students to extend their interests, knowledge and skills and in addition practice, demonstrate, record and assess the Key Competencies.
Level 3 is the final stage of the NZQA Approved Certificate in Mainstream Studies at Level 2.
Students who complete the THREE Star Award successfully, will be awarded the above certificate.
