SPEC Mainstream courses can be used to provide evidence for a range of core generic unit standards, and while the primary aim of the course is to develop the Key Competencies and achieve the NZQA approved certificate, further accreditation in the form of NCEA credits can be easily achieved provided all the performance criteria is met for each standard.

The NZQA approved certificate qualification, 1
12993 The Certificate in Mainstream Studies Level 1 is a two year course, ideally introduced to either a year 9 or year 10 student. During these two years a student can accrue up to 23 Level 1 credits and sometimes more by meeting the criteria for the three new literacy unit standards and the following:
3503 - Participate in a Team or Group to complete a routine              task.
1293 - Be interviewed in an informal one-to-one face-to-face           interview.
10790 - Converse with others
3501  - Demonstrate knowledge of and apply listening            techniques.
1285  - Make enquiries and complete practical transactions.

There are also many ‘task’ related unit standards that may be used by students depending on the tasks they choose to do.
