SPEC is an NZQA approved Course owner.
SPEC courses lead to THREE NZQA approved Certificate Qualifications that can also
be used to achieve unit standard credits. See below for details:-
112993 -
This certificate is achieved by the successful completion of the Shooting Star Award, the ONE Star Award and ONE Mainstream Interest Module of the student’s choice. This is a two year course with a focus on developing and demonstrating the Key Competencies. All three components MUST meet the SPEC requirements and be submitted for a SPEC external verification.
In addition the evidence generated throughout this two year course can be used for the new literacy unit standards
(10 Level 1 NCEA credits). There are also a further five ‘generic’ unit standards used ( 13 Level 1 NCEA credits) throughout the Certificate in mainstream Studies Level 1. Further credits are possible depending on tasks students choose.

This certificate is achieved by the successful completion of the TWO Star Award and the THREE Star Award. This is a two year course with a focus on developing and demonstrating the Key Competencies at a higher level. Both components MUST meet the SPEC requirements and be submitted for a SPEC external verification. In addition there are several unit standards taken from the core generic sector along with some task related standards that can be used throughout this two year course. This certificate is achieved by successful completion of the TRUMP course, a selection
of ten Headway Modules and the Ready for Work Course. This is a course that has a
flexible time frame for student who display a range of learning needs. This course
may take 3 -
“Students will demonstrate personal growth, self management, self esteem, motivation and a sense of self worth.”
All components MUST meet the SPEC requirements and be submitted for a SPEC external verification.
The three NZQA Approved Certificate Qualifications carry the following statement on the certificate:
“The course is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority under section 258 of the Education Act 1989”.
