Hi, I’m Carolyn!
I’ve dedicated my career to ensuring that all students—regardless of their challenges—have access to a great education, equal opportunities, and a strong sense of self-worth.
With over 45 years in teaching, I began my journey in the UK, where I served as Deputy Principal of a large special school in Staffordshire. In 1998, I emigrated to New Zealand with my husband and three small children, settling into a new life in Hawke’s Bay.
Recognising the need for more inclusive and student-centered learning pathways, I founded SPEC in 2008. Through SPEC, I’ve developed NZQA-approved programmes leading to two New Zealand qualifications, equipping learners with the skills and confidence to succeed. I’ve also created specialised programmes for the primary sector, laying the foundation for meaningful learning from an early age.
Beyond working with students, I’m committed to supporting educators. Through professional development, I help teaching staff shift their approach—moving from directing learning to facilitating it—encouraging curiosity, independence, and deeper engagement in their classrooms.
My journey has also included being part of the Governance Group for the New Zealand Certificate in Skills for Living for Supported Learners, an alternative qualification designed to provide meaningful and relevant opportunities for young people with significant neurodiverse challenges. Additionally, I’ve contributed to discussion groups for the New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills, ensuring accessible qualification pathways for students navigating the new co-requisite requirements for NCEA.
I have never worked a day in my life—because I love what I do. Teaching and learning are my passion, and I am humbled by the incredible success stories from students and educators across the motu.
I’m committed to shaping an inclusive and empowering future for education, where all learners and educators can thrive
